second time around

February 6th 2014 Comments: 77 Topics: ,

We always like to celebrate the anniversary of our blog “Finding Home” with a giveaway – a chance for our readers to grab one of our brass rings (well, usually they’re paper but we hope they have value to our fans).
photoSo, to honor our second anniversary, we’re offering the chance to possess a rare McAlpine Tankersley item. We published this little book Finding Home (coincidentally that’s where this blog obtained its moniker) about 10 years ago to celebrate our then 20th anniversary. It was a self-published tiny tome – its pages comprised of sepia photographs of our work and Bobby’s poetry. Originally it was given out to our clients as a humble thank you for their years of patronage. I can’t tell you how many requests I get from folks who want to buy one of these. We only have two or three left and I was able to sneak one out of our business manager’s clutches. Barbara Sallick, the founder of Waterworks, tells me she keeps it on her bedside table and even honored it on her blog.

Leave a comment below and this minute treasure could be gracing your bedside table.

Faithfully,
Greg Tankersley for McAlpine Tankersley

I’ve been lucky enough to spend time in a handful of your residential projects — in both Aspen and Houston — and have to say, I’m obesssed with your work. Saying I’m a fan would be an understatement. My appreciation for all that you do has grown exponentially over the years and I look forward to remaining your virtual student. I do not make a living in architecture or design — but devour the information you share. Your books are masterful and I’d love to add this special one to my library.

  10. Purchased The Home Within Us a few years back and have been an avid follower and fan of your work since. I feel lucky to have recently discovered your blog so I can now receive insight and inspiration on a regular basis. Thank you!

Beautiful book full of beautiful homes. In fact I have roofed many of them here in good ole Nashville.

  13. Debby says:

I enjoy your blog and look forward to new posts. I have a connection to you and yours through the small town of Haleyville, Al. I live there currently and have for the past 40 years. It makes me proud that one of our native sons has achieved such stature in the realm of design. Some of the Bobby Mcalpine original homes stand here as a testament of your roots.
I would love to have a copy of your treasured book!

  14. cicibianca says:

Wish I could have worked in office spaces like yours in Montgomery. All of the photos I have seen are perfect to the last detail. Evidence of the quality of the work done by your company. I would enjoy having the book.

  18. Working with the McAlpine team has been a wonderful experience. Your great eye has created an extraordinary house out of an ordinary house. Every room is visual poetry. You guys “got it” in ways other architects couldn’t. I enjoy reading the blog “Finding Home” and seeing your other projects. Congrats on the AD100 and wishing you all much future success.

  19. Theresa moore says:

You always inspire me! You designs are so genius in their simplicity. Never pretentious or showy, just welcoming:)

  20. Linda Spiese says:

Court learned about Bobby’ s work when I saw a magazine that featured it. Fascinated with what I saw. Then, over the years, I spotted it in other magazines and took note. A designer in Alabama told me about a restaurant, or maybe a bar. I think it was in Montgomery? I’ve forgotten the name but always thought I would check it out sometime. I became a fan of Bobby personally when he spoke at Brooks Museum in Memphis, sponsored by Decorative Arts Trust. I bought his book and chatted with him very briefly. I have enjoyed it and would treasure a copy of the small book.

  21. Melinda Rich says:

Here in Australia we have some amazing homes but nothing that even comes close to the character filled, incredibly beautiful homes that I have the privilege of viewing via your blog. Your homes are a work of art…….

  22. Cyd Szymanski says:

Your words are evocative. Your design, provocative. Whether McAlpine, Tankersley or Ferrier, your result is always Superior! This tiny book of word and sepia is something I would love to keepia!

  25. Angela Oleson says:

Very much enjoy your blog, and would be honored to have a copy of your book.

  26. Courtney Thomson Czarnecki says:

I like to think of myself as one of Bobby McAlpine’s first (and oldest) admirers. I have apparently lost the issue of Traditional Home magazine that chose my answer to be published about 13 years ago in response to their question to readers “What room would you remodel if money were no object?” Here is what I wrote, verbatim: ” I would gladly dismantle my humble home brick by brick with my bare hands were there even a chance that the gentle genius, Bobby McAlpine, would create in it’s place one of his understated masterpieces. This, to me, would be the ultimate remodel.” Perhaps you remember reading this. I so wish I knew the month or even the year of the issue. I now do live in a home, here in Winston-Salem, NC, that comes quite close to looking like a McAlpine creation….albeit a modest one. I’ve truly found my home and it gives me great peace and delight every day. Thank you, McAlpine team, for adding so much real good to the world. Courtney Czarnecki

  27. Jeffrey Owens says:

Well, Greg, there are double bourbons for you and Bobby if this little book finds its way to Highlands. : ) JO

  31. I have been following and admiring your work since I was first introduced to it at the age of 13. Hats off to all your success, it is much deserved, and your work is much appreciated! Wishing you decades more of inspiration! ~Cheers

  32. Gretchen says:

Oh, it would be so lovely to have this little treasure. I am a huge admirer of your work.

  33. I recently heard you speak during the Cathedral Antiques Lecture Series. You approach architecture as a philosophy. Your comments took me back to my studies of Schiller. His dictum was that beauty and art are fundamental to the development of society and the individual. Yes, it is worthwhile to seek beauty and balance. And that’s what you excel at creating for your clients.

  34. kchart842 says:

From a Louisiana traditionalist, thank you Bobby and Greg for giving me a different perspective in design and architecture that has me Finding (My) Home.

  35. Vivienne Nichols says:

In the novel, Ireland, by Frank Delaney, an old bard, at a fireside storytelling session asks the children if they know what an architect does. A boy replies, “An architect causes buildings.” Isn’t that a lovely way to describe what you do? You cause buildings. Find homes. I think you rank with those master artisans, craftsman and storytellers of old and I can’t think of a greater gift to a culture or era. To bring artful expressions that causes beauty and places that we call home. I’d feel as if I were in possession rare treasure…a masterpiece..if I held your book in my hand.

  36. jane brundridge says:

soulful and spiritual? yes. it is the monasticism of design that make your project’s so very satisfying. old soul indeed.

  37. lynlee says:

love your work … would be so happy to have this book!!

  50. Betsy Appleby says:

OMG, that would be THE coolest gift for my husband, Dale. Bobby was his thesis advisor at Auburn and Dale has always talked about how talented Bobby is! War Eagle!

  51. I glories in Bobby’s tendered work in all its forms; his art, architecture, interiors, and the likes of his poetry which are equally venerated. Like many on this thread, I’ve spent my youth delighting and participating in the facets of my inspiration in various routes of the arts. I first stumbled upon the work of McAlpine Tankersley driving through Piper Glen, Old Course Dr. Perhaps some of you would understand when I say it put chills down my spine, the abode, just sitting there, carved into the hilltop, so stately and symmetrical, off the beaten path of Piper Glens lavish yet seemingly unvarying estates. This one was unique and authentic, detailed but refreshingly modern, something between French and English, but definitely the work of McAlpine Tankersley; I had to stop. I wanted to just get out of my car, walk the grounds, ring the doorbell and ask for a tour. I knew that would be a little weird, plus I was late for work just detouring through the lovely matured district in the midst of fall, so I took the best picture I could and posted it on instagram and linked it to twitter. Hours later I was thrilled to receive a reply from the one and only @mcalpinetank. I told my friends that night that I received a tweet from the most sought after southern architecture firms! Of course they didn’t care, architecture is lame, but I did and it made my night. I sat by the camp fire all night into the morning hours dreaming of McAlpines work, it’s truly something more to me than I could ever explain. As McAlpine Tankersleys youngest fan boy, I’d be absolutely honored to grab the splendors of the treasured “brass rings” – by way of its sepia photographs and poetry. After all, my mother forgot to get me Bobbys hardcover “The Home Within Us” for Christmas, I was very disappointed, but I believe this opportunity gives me another chance at finding home. Please do consider myself as a top contender in this anniversary giveaway. And to all on this thread, do follow me on the socials, I post some neat stuff from time to time, and don’t be surprised if you stumble upon a few of McAlpine Tankersleys local Charlotte works 😉 @brysonathomas

    Thankyou,

    And Happy Anniversary!

P.S. You are so talented and I love everything you do!

  57. Patty Alias says:

I had tickets to see Bobby and Susan Ferrier speak last week in Atlanta, but couldn’t make it due to Snowpocalypse. I also couldn’t pick up the book that I ordered online to have them sign, so this would be a nice consolation prize!

  72. As a senior Interior Design student at Auburn University with a first degree in Cellular Biology, I am particularly drawn to MBF’s philosophy of design from the inside out, allowing the interior DNA of a space to suggest the direction of it’s exterior membrane. Your work is at once arresting and unforgettable to me. War Eagle.
